Mets should allow Daniel Murphy to leave

When Daniel Murphy was tearing the cover off the ball in the NLDS and NLCS, there were some who thought the Mets might have no choice but to re-sign him after the season. Even if Murphy’s torrid hitting had continued in the World Series, the Mets would’ve still been wise to let him go.

Murphy filed for free agency on Monday, and the thought is that he’ll likely be able to snag a three or four-year deTal worth upwards of $11 million annually. The Mets don’t have to lose him for nothing, though. They can extend a qualifying offer, which would result in draft pick compensation should Murphy sign elsewhere.
