The Mets might not have enough performers, but they have a director of performance and sports science.
Jim Cavallini, who spent the last three years working for the United States Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C., was named to the newly created position on Tuesday. Also, Brian Chicklo was promoted to head trainer, replacing Ray Ramirez, who was fired after the season. Chicklo was previously the assistant trainer. Joseph Golia is the new assistant trainer.
Cavallini will oversee athletic training functions, physical therapy, mental skills, strength and conditioning, nutrients and sleep management, according to general manager Sandy Alderson.
