The Mets bobbed while the other teams at the top of the MLB Draft weaved. For the first time in 12 years, the first five picks were college players, but that didn’t scare the Mets away from going with youth, a departure from their preference the last half-decade.
With two of their top choices, college third basemen Alec Bohm and Johnathan India off the board, they picked Wisconsin high school outfielder Jarred Kelenic, a potential five-tool player who has committed to Louisville if he doesn’t sign a professional contract.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder is the first Wisconsin native to go in the top 10, and helped USA Baseball’s 18-and-under team win gold medals each of the last two years.
