Mets select Brett Baty in MLB draft surprise

The Mets added to the one strength of their minor league system. Need had to wait.

After being linked to a number of college pitchers, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen’s first draft pick Monday night at the MLB draft was power-hitting Texas high school third baseman Brett Baty, who joins a system that includes a number of quality infield prospects, like Andres Gimenez and Ronny Matricio.

“He’s the best high school bat [in the draft],” MLB Network analyst Jonathan Mayo said from the draft in Secaucus, N.J.

Baty is the first high school infielder the Mets have chosen in the first round since Dominic Smith in 2013 (11th overall).
