Steven Matz and Seth Lugo are close to taking significant steps in their respective rehabs.
Both Mets pitchers, according to manager Terry Collins, likely will soon begin mound work for the first time since spring training, after recently increasing their throwing on flat ground to 120 feet.
“They have thrown so far without any discomfort, which is a good sign,” Collins said before the Mets faced the Braves at Citi Field on Wednesday.
Matz has been sidelined with elbow discomfort he later described as a flexor tendon strain. And Lugo has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow he is attempting to heal without undergoing Tommy John surgery.
