The numbers could suggest mediocrity, but upon closer review Mets officials are largely pleased with the manner in which the pitching staff has performed this season.
“For the most part we are giving the team a chance to win, and that’s what it’s all about,” pitching coach Dave Eiland said.
Added manager Mickey Callaway: “They are keeping us in the game and that is their job.”
The Mets will take a 4.16 ERA into Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays at Citi Field, but that number also must be adjusted for the Vargas Factor: Veteran left-hander Jason Vargas has imploded in his three starts for the team.
