One catcher is headed for a much longer recovery than the other.
Travis d’Arnaud has opted to undergo Tommy John surgery next week, the Mets announced Friday, after he was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Kevin Plawecki, who landed on the 10-day DL Friday morning with a hairline fracture in his left hand, is expected to return in 3-4 weeks, according to the Mets’ doctors.
With d’Arnaud’s season likely over and Plawecki out for the time being, the Mets called up catcher Jose Lobaton, whom they signed in the offseason, to join rookie Tomas Nido.
