Winning a championship wasn’t enough to save Edgardo Alfonzo.
The former Mets infielder has been told his contract won’t be renewed by the club, according to an industry source, after managing Class A Brooklyn to the New York-Penn League championship.
Alfonzo was informed by Mets officials that the new regime, headed by general manager Brodie Van Wagenen – who was hired last October – wants to hire its own people.
Alfonzo spent the last three seasons managing Brooklyn after a standout career with the Mets – he ranks fifth in club history in hits (1,136).
The Mets have offered Alfonzo an ambassador role within the organization, but it’s unclear if he will accept.
