The Mets on Monday were close to completing a minor league deal with Rene Rivera, who previously served as a backup catcher with the club, according to a source.
Rivera, who was released recently by the Giants, would likely begin the season at Triple-A Syracuse. Devin Mesoraco was reassigned to minor-league camp Saturday but has refused to report. If Mesoraco is not released he would be placed on the restricted list.
Longtime baseball writer Marty Noble will be remembered during a moment of silence before the Mets’ home opener, according to a club source. Noble, 70, died Sunday during a visit to spring training.
