The Mets are debating whether to make a run at Cuban free agent third baseman Yulieski Gourriel, according to Jon Heyman.
Gourriel, 32, was recently declared a free agent by Major League Baseball.
The highest-ranked prospect in Cuba before defecting, Gourriel has hit .345/.417/.580 with 250 home runs and 1,018 RBIs in 15 professional seasons — 14 of which were in Cuba, with part of one season coming in Japan.
The expectation from some is that Gourriel will command roughly $10 million per season, though it’s not yet clear what he’s looking for in terms of length of the deal.
