The Mets are planning to tender 26-year-old right-handed relief pitcher Jenrry Mejia a contract for the 2016 season. Mejia barely played in 2015, as he was suspended 80 games in early April for testing positive for stanozolol. He returned from that suspension, pitched well for 7.1 innings, and was suspended 162 games for testing positive for the same substance.
Mejia's 2015 salary was technically $2.6 million, but the Mets didn't have to pay him for the time he was suspended, which was almost the entire season. With a suspension that runs through nearly two-thirds of the 2016 season, they won't have to pay him much next year, either.
