Prior to the start of their series with the Nationals, the Mets have optioned Joey Lucchesi to the Alternate Training site. To take his place on the roster, the club recalled left-handed reliever Stephen Tarpley to join their bullpen.
Lucchesi has made two starts, including last night’s loss to the Cubs, and has pitched in three total games for the club. Lucchesi has posted a 6.75 ERA, a 1.47 FIP, a 1.13 WHIP, a 12.4 K/9, and a 2.3 BB/9 in eight innings of work. With the abundance of off-days surrounding their upcoming home series with the Red Sox, the Mets likely will not need a fifth starter until their road series against the Cardinals in early May, so optioning Lucchesi in favor of a fresh bullpen arm is a smart call.
