Mets’ offense stays silent, pitching starts limping as it gets ugly

MILWAUKEE — In remembrance of the iconic sitcom set in this city, these are “Unhappy Days” for the Mets.

Their season may have jumped the shark Sunday, when starting pitcher Jason Vargas departed with “mild” left hamstring tightness and a makeshift lineup stagnated.

At least this Mets disappointment took only nine innings in a 3-2 loss to the Brewers at Miller Park that completed Milwaukee’s three-game sweep. It came a day after the teams played 18 innings, with the Mets losing on Ryan Braun’s two-run single against Chris Flexen.

A Mets rotation that lacks any kind of depth took a hit in the fifth, when Vargas was removed for a pinch hitter because of the hamstring issue.
