Mets OF Michael Cuddyer is retiring

Mets OF Michael Cuddyer, who was about to enter the second year of his two-year contract, is retiring from baseball, according to multiple reports.

Cuddyer was set to make $12.5 million this coming season, and it wasn’t yet clear whether the Mets would be paying him an injury settlement or buying any portion of that out as part of his retirement.

The Mets signed Cuddyer to a two-year contract prior to the 2015 season, forfeiting their first round draft pick for this year in the process.

Earlier on Friday night, news that Cuddyer had retired briefly appeared on the transaction page of the Mets’ website (which is run by MLBAM) before it was taken down.
