PORT ST. LUCIE — Kevin Plawecki would like to think he is better than what he has shown the Mets over the past two seasons.
The pressure is off now. The Mets have Travis d’Arnaud and Rene Rivera lined up at catcher to begin the Grapefruit League season, leaving the 26-year-old Plawecki to spend spring training working on his craft.
In 48 games in the major league last season, Plawecki had a disappointing .197/.298/.265 slash line with one homer and 11 RBIs. It followed his equally anemic 2015 season.
“I believe I’m a starting catcher in this league and whether it’s here, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Plawecki said Thursday.
