Mets now can stash useful veterans after they go unclaimed

PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets are free to assign three veteran players as they please after all went unclaimed Friday by other teams.

Devin Mesoraco, Adeiny Hechavarria and Rajai Davis all had upward mobility clauses in their contracts that would have allowed them to leave for other teams willing to place them on the 25-man roster.

The Mets can now move any or all of the players to Triple-A Syracuse if they choose. Even so, Hechavarria remains in contention for a backup infield role with the club, and Mesoraco is a consideration at backup catcher, with Travis d’Arnaud perhaps set to begin the season on the injured list.
