Mets muster little offense in dropping series opener to Dodgers

The Mets drew a bullpen game against the Dodgers in the series opener in Los Angeles, hoping to find a different result after getting swept by the defending World Champions at Citi Field this past weekend and to get back above .500 and back in range of a pennant race.

The offense started slowly, with a sharp Pete Alonso single marking the team’s only baserunner over the first two frames. Meanwhile, in the bottom of the second, the Dodgers demonstrated the patience and productivity the Mets offense too often lacks. After Corey Seager drew a leadoff walk—with the help of a couple of borderline ball calls that frustrated Walker—newly-minted Mets killer Will Smith lined a double to right to put runners on second and third.
