The Mets eked out an improbable 3-2 victory over the Yankees last night at Yankee Stadium. Jeff McNeil provided the key hit—a go-ahead two-run homer off former Met Michael Tonkin that turned out to be the game winner. Adam Ottavino allowed the Yankees to get back within a run, but the rest of the bullpen held firm. Alex Young retired the two batters he was tasked with in his big league debut and Dedniel Núñez and Phil Maton each contributed a scoreless inning. Jake Diekman somehow struck out Aaron Judge looking with a runner on en route to his fourth save of the season, which also secured a victory for José Quintana—his fifth of the year.
