Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: the Mets had a lead in yesterday’s game, but couldn’t hold it. Indeed, solo homers by Starling Marte and Brett Baty combined with another strong outing from Luis Severino gave the Amazins a one-run lead heading into the ninth inning. Edwin Díaz came on to try to close the game out, and he once again coughed up another lead, which resulted in the game going to extra innings. Then the bullpen imploded and gave up five runs in the tenth, and the Mets offense didn’t even bother to score the ghost runner in the bottom of the frame, resulting in a 7-2 defeat for the team’s fifth straight loss.
