Mets look to forgotten slugger and hated one to carry them

MIAMI — There is a famous scene at the very end of “The Candidate,” Robert Redford and Peter Boyle ducking into an empty hotel room to avoid the press and evade supporters just after he has been declared the winner of a U.S. Senate seat from California, just before he’s to deliver the acceptance speech.

“Marvin,” Redford asks Boyle, playing his campaign manager. “What do we do now?”

The Mets could understand that ennui, reporting for work Tuesday a day after the potpourri of emotion and sadness that had led off this series with the Marlins, a night and a baseball game was stripped of any significance other than honoring the memory of Jose Fernandez.
