For now, it’s merely five days in the bullpen. In the long run, who knows?
With two off days this week, the Mets are skipping Steven Matz’s spot in the rotation during their final five games before the All-Star break, and will use him in relief. Manager Mickey Callaway said he expected the struggling southpaw to return to the rotation after the break, but he also left open a small possibility Matz could remain a reliever to help the leaky bullpen.
“He’s one of our top five starting pitchers. We will do anything as an organization to try and win games,” Callaway said Tuesday before the Mets and Yankees met in the Subway Series at Citi Field.
