Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia became the first player to receive a permanent ban from Major League Baseball after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs for the third time.
Mejia, 26, tested positive for Boldenone, an old-school anabolic steroid, according to ESPN.
The hard-throwing right-hander was suspended for 50 games early last season after his first failed test. He returned to appear in seven games in July before flunking another test, earning a 162-game ban that would have carried over into the 2016 season.
He avoided arbitration with the Mets by signing a one-year, $2.47 million contract in the offseason.
