Mets’ Jed Lowrie is finally playing competitive baseball again

Crazy things are happening in Queens.

The Mets are in playoff contention. Pete Alonso is breaking records. And Jed Lowrie, until now just a rumor as a Met, began a rehabilitation assignment Tuesday night.

The oft-injured infielder was batting second as the designated hitter for Single-A Port St. Lucie, as he attempts to come back from an assortment of maladies that have kept him in Florida all season.

“We’re excited about that,” manager Mickey Callaway said before the Mets hosted the Indians at Citi Field to start a nine-game homestand. “It’s still a situation where it’s going to be day-to-day obviously.
