JUPITER, Fla. — The Mets’ final roster decision for Opening Day could amount to whether it makes sense to carry Michael Conforto in a bench role.
Team officials have been consistent in saying Conforto, who is rehabbing from left-shoulder surgery, is likely to begin the season on the disabled list. But manager Mickey Callaway revealed Saturday the reason Phillip Evans hasn’t officially claimed the final roster spot is team brass is trying to determine if it might make sense to carry Conforto on the bench.
“At this point, [Conforto] is likely to be on the DL when we break camp,” Callaway said.
