The Mets reached out to the Athletics about trading for Danny Valencia shortly before they swung a trade for Kelly Johnson, reports Ken Davidoff of the New York Post.
Valencia, 31, is hitting .331/.372/.554 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs in 47 games (188 plate-appearances) for the A’s.
He’s due to become a free agent after the 2017 season.
Valencia has played the majority of his games at third base, but also has experience at second base, first base, and left field.
At 28-39, the Athletics are in last place in the A.
