Mets great Rusty Staub is recovering after suffering a heart attack on a flight to New York, the team announced Saturday.
The JFK-bound flight was diverted back to Ireland, where the 71-year-old Staub is awaiting a medical transport.
“The prognosis is good and Rusty and his family ask that we respect his privacy during this period,” the Mets said in a statement. “He is in the thoughts and prayers of the Mets organization.”
A Go Fund Me campaign was started to raise money to get Staub home on a medical flight.
Staub, coined “Le Grand Orange” during his heyday with the Montreal Expos, was a fan favorite during his stints with the Mets from 1972-75 and 1981-85.
