MILWAUKEE — Doug Melvin’s candidacy for the Mets’ general manager opening has a former commissioner’s endorsement.
Bud Selig — whose daughter Wendy hired Melvin as Brewers GM in 2002 — told The Post that he believes the 66-year-old Melvin would be a strong fit for the Mets, who are seeking Sandy Alderson’s replacement to head the front office.
Melvin is among five known candidates for the job, with callback interviews scheduled for next week.
“Doug is a great baseball man,” Selig said. “I have known Doug a long time and when Wendy brought him here he did a great job.
