WASHINGTON — Peter Alonso’s surge just went national.
In a Futures Game replete with home runs, the Mets prospect took the cake with a monster, seventh-inning, two-run blast to left field, providing the top highlight in the U.S. Team’s 10-6 victory over the World Team Sunday afternoon at Nationals Park.
According to MLB.com’s Statcast, the ball’s exit velocity of 113.6 mph and launch angle of 46 degrees has not been matched by any major-league hit since the system began operations in 2015.
In a scene reminiscent of Carlton Fisk’s walk-off homer in 1975 World Series Game 6, Alonso tossed aside his bat and jogged a few steps as he made sure the ball didn’t sway foul, then blew a kiss to someone in the stands as he approached third base.
