Despite coming off a season in which they had one of the worst and least healthy pitching staffs in all of baseball, the Mets are focused solely on adding bats at the moment, according to Mike Puma of the Post. Puma says they’re hoping to add those bats at second base—or third, with Asdrubal Cabrera playing second—first base as insurance for Dom Smith and in the outfield.
The team’s lack of willingness to add pitching other than Anthony Swarzak is frustrating. There are unquestionably needs on the position player portion of the Mets’ roster, as Smith was underwhelming at the plate and especially in the field in his major league debut last year, Amed Rosario is entering just his first full major league season, and Michael Conforto will be coming back from a serious injury that sounds likely to keep him sidelined at the beginning of the 2018 season.
