Mets’ first-round pick Brett Baty shows he has ‘awesome’ power

Brett Baty stood near the cage, watching the Mets take batting practice until it was his turn. He got a word of encouragement from Pete Alonso, stepped in the cage and started the show.

Donning an uppercut left-handed swing that manager Mickey Callaway later said reminded him of Aubrey Huff and Jay Bruce, Baty hit one onto the Shea Bridge. He hit another past the second deck of seating in right field. A few onto the batter’s eye in center.

It will likely be a few years before Baty steps into the batter’s box at Citi Field for a major league game, but the third baseman — who the Mets drafted with the 12th-overall pick out of Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas — the newly signed prospect put on a show before his introductory presser.
