Mets extend qualifying offer to Pete Alonso

The Mets have extended their third qualifying offer of the day, this time to star first baseman Pete Alonso, who just wrapped up his final year under team control.

It’s not expected that Alonso would accept the offer, as he and agent Scott Boras have not-so-secretly been seeking a nine-figure contract from an MLB team. Should Alonso decline the offer, he could still sign a free-agent deal with the Mets—and if another team signs Alonso, the Mets would receive a compensatory draft pick.

Alonso is coming off a relatively down year by his standards, hitting for a 123 OPS+ and mashing 34 home runs and 88 RBI while playing in all 162 games.
