KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Mets blame a few factors for the Game 1 loss in the World Series, like a failure to finish the Royals off in the ninth and a lack of hitting in extra innings.
The apparent pine tar on Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez’s right shin guard Tuesday night is not among them.
“I’ve seen throughout baseball, everywhere, you have it,” Terry Collins said before Wednesday’s Game 2 at Kauffman Stadium. “And again, catchers, they’ve got to get a grip, too, especially on cold and damp nights. They need a grip on the baseball, so they use pine tar for themselves.
