WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Drew Smith impressed the Mets with solid relief pitching in the second half of last season, but he won’t get a chance to build off that momentum in 2019.
A day after Smith was sent to New York with discomfort in his right elbow, the club on Monday announced he will undergo Tommy John surgery. The procedure is scheduled for Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Smith appeared in four games this spring.
“That’s a tough loss for us,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “He did a great job for us at the end of the season last year and was in a real good spot this year.
