Mets GM Sandy Alderson spoke with reporters on Thursday and said that signing free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes would be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole — logic that is faulty on a number of levels.

It’s not as if we’re not looking to improve the team in significant ways, but it has to make sense in terms of how these pieces all fit. And even if you go back to the trade deadline, we were trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
