Mets’ disastrous season nearly gets its cherry on top

One embarrassment continues to elude the Mets in this otherwise horrific season: They haven’t been no-hit.

But there was certainly concern Sunday that even this meager measure of success was about to dissipate.

Brandon Nimmo ended the suspense with a solid single leading off the seventh inning — after Nathan Eovaldi had retired the first 18 batters he faced — and the Mets eventually had a garden-variety 9-0 loss to the Rays at Citi Field.

The Mets had only four base runners as they were shut out for a second straight game.

The Mets (35-51) were never in the game as they attempted to win their first series since May 20, when they completed a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks.
