Mets designate Jake Diekman for assignment, call up Matt Gage

The Mets have desiganted 37-year-old left-handed reliever Jake Diekman for assignment and called up 31-year-old lefty Matt Gage to replace him on the active roster. Diekman has been awful this year, as he’s racked up a 5.63 ERA and a 6.12 FIP.

And it’s not like Diekman has been unlucky. His 16.6 percent walk rate is far too high, and among qualified relievers, it’s the second-worst mark in all of baseball. Only Aroldis Chapman has walked opposing hitters at a higher rate. Among that same group of relievers, Diekman also has the fourth-highest rate of home runs allowed per nine innings at 1.
