The Mets have designated RH reliever Carlos Torres for assignment, the team announced.
With the Antonio Bastardo signing becoming official on Friday, a spot on the 40-man roster was needed, and Torres was removed in order to create room.
The Mets had avoided arbitration with Torres earlier this month, coming to terms on a one-year deal worth $1.05 million.
If Torres is claimed by another team or traded by the Mets, they won’t be on the hook for any portion of his deal.
If Torres goes unclaimed, is not traded, and winds up being outrighted to the minors, the Mets would still have the option of releasing him before Opening Day and only paying a portion of the $1.
