After Carlos Torres was announced as the new pitcher in the second game of the Mets’ weekend series with the Cincinnati Reds, he was able to go home, sleep, play video games, shoot baskets and even study video of the first batter he would face, Ivan De Jesus.
Because of the suspension of Saturday’s game, which was tied at 1-1 heading into the seventh inning, Torres had to wait 19 hours 21 minutes to throw his first pitch.
The elongated preparation worked, as De Jesus grounded out. But the Mets needed seven more innings — and five more pitchers — before they went on to win, 2-1, in 13 innings on Sunday afternoon.
