Mets decide to play it safe with Michael Conforto

PORT ST. LUCIE — Michael Conforto’s season will begin on the disabled list, as the Mets had anticipated from the start.

A day after manager Mickey Callaway left the door ajar for Conforto possibly beginning the season in a bench role, the outfielder was informed he will be placed on the DL. Phillip Evans is expected to claim the 25th roster spot to begin the season.

Conforto, who is rehabbing from left shoulder surgery, is expected to rejoin the club well ahead of the May 1 timetable set by the club over the winter. In recent days Conforto began playing in Grapefruit League games.
