Citing Steven Matz‘s injury history, New York Mets manager Terry Collins said on Sunday that the Mets would not use Matz as a reliever this season.
Matz, who is due to rejoin the team on September 1 after spending nearly two months on the disabled list due to a strained lat, posted a 1.32 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in two major league starts (13.2 innings pitched) before suffering the injury.
The plan is for Matz to rejoin the rotation with the team reverting to a six-man starting staff in order to conserve Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard‘s innings.
