WASHINGTON -- The Mets have added an amendment to Yoenis Cespedes' contract allowing them to negotiate with the newly acquired outfielder for the entirety of the free-agent period this offseason, the team announced on Tuesday.
Under their old arrangement, the Mets were allowed to negotiate with Cespedes for only five days after the conclusion of the World Series. Now, they can negotiate deep into the offseason with him if they desire.
The amendment gives the Mets a far greater chance to re-sign Cespedes, whose unique contract structure allows him to become a few agent before accruing six years of service time.
