MIAMI — The late innings have become an obstacle course the Mets are barely maneuvering.
On Wednesday, manager Mickey Callaway was forced to summon closer Edwin Diaz for the final out in a game the Mets led by six runs after eight innings. A night earlier, the Mets sweated out a victory after squandering much of their late lead.
“We need to start executing pitches,” Callaway said after the Mets beat the Marlins 6-4. “We’re throwing pitches middle of the plate and we led off the inning with a walk, that is never a good thing.
