Brodie Van Wagenen isn’t taking a conservative approach to his first draft with the Mets.
The first-year general manager took a big swing to kick off the second day of the MLB draft, selecting highly regarded pitcher Matthew Allan of Seminole High School in Sanford, Fla., in the third round (89th overall).
The 6-foot-3 right-hander was still on the board due to a hefty asking price. He was considered a first-round talent, ranked as the 13th-best prospect by MLBPipeline.com and No. 16 by Baseball America.
“We fully expect Matthew to sign and obviously we had to make some allocations in our selections after that,” vice president of amateur scouting Tommy Tanous said on a conference call, referring to the Mets using their final seven picks Tuesday on college seniors.
