The Mets got great news Thursday when learning that Jacob deGrom simply hyperextended his elbow. He has no structural damage and will not need surgery, which would have meant missing most of this season, if not all of it. Instead, the team announced he'll prepare for his next start.
This is typical for pitchers that have done this in the past. DeGrom is not out of the woods, though.
The Mets know the risks. Their manager Mickey Callaway and pitching coach Dave Eiland were both pitchers. DeGrom is their ace. In the end, while it may serve deGrom's ego to let him "prepare for his next start," I hope these men let him rest.
