This was like Frank Sinatra following Bruce Springsteen or Johnny Carson coming on after David Letterman. Jacob deGrom and then Noah Syndergaard set the Mets pitching bar pretty high in the team’s two previous games and looked like a tough act to follow.
But Matt Harvey is a pretty good act himself. Just ask the Cardinals, the team with baseball’s best record.
But for all his often-brilliant work Monday, Harvey only got a no-decision as closer Jeurys Familia failed in the ninth and the Mets’ offense flopped most of the game. Harvey only got one run of support but made it stand up through eight shutout innings, allowing just six hits while equaling his season high with nine strikeouts.
