The Mets added four players to their 40-man roster to protect them from next month’s Rule 5 draft, including Andres Gimenez, one of their top infield prospects.
The 21-year-old played his first full season with Double-A Binghamton in 2019 and finished with just a .695 OPS, but Gimenez flourished in the Arizona Fall League, where in 18 games with Scottsdale he had a .999 OPS, the highest of anyone on the team who played a full slate of games.
In addition to Gimenez, the Mets also moved catcher Ali Sanchez and pitchers Thomas Szapucki and Jordan Humphreys to the 40-man roster, meaning none can be taken in the Rule 5 draft.
