Mets add 28-save arm to bullpen, bracing for Darren O’Day price

The Mets made a low-risk, potential high-upside acquisition Thursday, signing reliever Jim Henderson to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.

Henderson, 33, had his best season in 2013, when he went 5-5 with a 2.70 ERA and 28 saves in 61 appearances for the Brewers. The right-hander spent most of last season at Triple-A in his comeback from shoulder surgery.

The top reliever on the market, Darren O’Day, may command upwards of $30 million over four years, a price tag that Mets officials deem too steep. But the team will continue searching for lower-priced options.
