Late Monday night, the New York Mets acquired recently DFA’d outfielder Alexander Canario from the Chicago Cubs for the oft traded cash considerations. The team announced he will take Nick Madrigal’s place on the 40-man roster, as the infielder was placed on the 60-day IL with his shoulder injury.
Canario is an interesting flier to take for the Mets, especially since their outfield depth is questionable at best in the upper minor leagues. Canario, who was DFA’d by the Cubs in the wake of the Justin Turner signing, was originally acquired as a main piece in the Kris Bryant trade from the Cubs to the Giants at the 2021 trade deadline.
