Matz struggles again as Mets fall to Cardinals, 9-1

1) Steven Matz pitched two hitless innings before unraveling in the third and fourth when he was charged with seven runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks. Betrayed by poor defense behind him as well as his own error, the Cardinals scored three times in the third and four more in the fourth. Matz (1-2) was removed after walking Dexter Fowler to force in a run on his 88th pitch.

2) Corey Oswalt made his Major League debut in relief of Matz in the fourth and allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
