Matt Harvey Weighs In (Gingerly) Over Talk of His Being Shut Down

MIAMI — Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon who performed Tommy John surgery on Matt Harvey in 2013, called him recently to check in. Andrews had been in contact with Scott Boras, Harvey’s agent, and he told Harvey that he was now recommending limiting him to 180 innings this season, his first full year back pitching after the surgery.

Sitting in the visitors’ dugout here Saturday, Harvey said that idea had been discussed “for a while.” The way Harvey explained it, if he were to exceed that limit, he would pitch more innings than he ever had at the major league level, and Andrews wanted to avoid that.
